AC Leaking Water? Causes and Fixes

Air conditioners remove gallons of moisture from humid Grand Strand air. When the drain path fails, that water ends up where it should not.

Common causes

Clogged condensate drain line

Algae and debris can block the line so water backs up and overflows the drain pan.

Frozen coil that is melting

A frozen coil can overload the pan as it thaws.

Cracked or rusted drain pan

An old pan can leak even when the drain is clear.

Disconnected or damaged drain line

A displaced fitting or damaged line causes leaks.

Dirty filter or low refrigerant

These can cause freezing and then leaks.

What you can safely check

  • Turn the system off to stop the leak.
  • Clean up standing water to reduce damage.
  • Check the filter.
  • Check whether the drain line outlet is dripping.

When to call a professional. Call a technician for any ongoing leak. Water can damage ceilings, floors and insulation, and many systems have a safety switch that will shut the system off. Never open electrical panels or remove access covers on equipment. If you smell burning or see smoke, turn off power and call 911 if there is any danger.

Is a leaking AC an emergency?

It can be, because water damage progresses quickly. Turn the system off and call us.

Why is my AC drain clogging?

Humidity and warm conditions encourage algae growth in drain lines. Regular maintenance helps prevent it.

Will my AC shut off by itself?

Many systems have a float switch that shuts the system down when the pan fills.
